P.S. to Moe's Grill

I've changed my mind... I'm NEVER going back to Moe's Southwest Grill again. I went there for the second time last week, and it was a disappointing experience.

I was feeling a little overwhelmed by school work last week, so I decided to take a break and de-stress by what else... eating. So, I went to have some fish tacos at Moe's, since it was one of the closest eating places to the journalism school. Since I was feeling particularly swamped, I thought I deserved TWO tacos, which I proceeded to order.

When I started eating the tacos though, I was horrified by the way it tasted. When I first wrote about their fish tacos, I already noted that their fish, instead of the one-piece fillets I was used to at Rubio's in California, was crumbled into several pieces. This time though, the fish was shredded and seasoned much like they do chicken when they serve it in tacos. The fact that the fish was shredded was bad enough, but the seasoning was just awful. It was TOO salty, and the fish was too "fishy", and obviously not fresh.

I know it's a lot to expect good fish dishes in the midwest, being so far from the coast. But it was just an utter disappointment to have fish tacos that tasted that awful. I never waste food, but it was so bad that I couldn't finish them.

Lab-as Seafood Restaurant in Dumaguete

The first time I went to Dumaguete City was some six or seven years ago. I went there to go scuba diving in Apo Island, one of the Philippines' best-protected marine sanctuaries. Apo Island is a 30-minute boat ride away from the city. There are two things I remember from that trip. One, diving Apo Island was great, and two, the food in Dumaguete was cheap.

So when my best couple-friends Anjou and Anton invited me to go diving with them in Apo Island over the Holy Week, I didn't hesitate. They never make me feel like a third wheel, so I figured going on this trip would be fun, and not at all awkward. Diving + cheap food... what's not to like?

We stayed at Antulang Resort, which is more than an hour's drive away from Dumaguete (and the airport). We ate most of our meals in Antulang (that's a whole different story), so I didn't really get to eat in the city until it was my last day.

After a couple of days of fantastic dives and a day of just bumming around in the re…

Catching up with cousins at Italianni's

My cousin Bong is a human rights lawyer in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He was in town recently to visit family and friends, and more significantly, to promote his self-published book, "God Loves Bakla". It talks about his painful struggle to stay in the closet, and the liberation he felt when he finally found the strength and courage to step out of it. I'm very proud that he has come out (no pun intended) with this book. It's going to be a very controversial book for some, and a helpful one for many others. But... that's a whole different story.

Anyway, I was lucky that he had some time to have lunch with me during his brief holiday, and he decided that we should meet up in Italianni's, because he missed having the caesar's salad there. Along with our other cousin Treena, we discussed his book over pizza and pasta. Luckily for me, they were agreeable to having pescetarian-friendly choices, so we ordered their Fettucine Alfredo with Shrimp, some Pizza Margherita,…

A new find: Relish, Hello Happiness! Restaurant

I'd seen the construction of this new restaurant "Relish" going on, because it's right beside Cerchio, where Chi and I so often have lunch. This week, we decided to finally try this new place. The facade amuses me, because it's so positive about how your experience will go. In fact, the complete name of the restaurant appears to be "Relish, Hello Happiness!" (Yes, it comes complete with exclamation point.)

When Chi and I entered, our first impression of the place was that it was a restaurant for "ladies who lunch", probably because a lot of the clientele at that time were, well, ladies. It was perfect for our purposes, as we wanted a place to chat and catch up on gossip since we hadn't seen each other for a few weeks.

I ordered the pumpkin soup to start, since I am still in search of the best pumpkin soup in the city, and Chi and I both ordered the Cream Dory with Lemon Pepper Sauce.

The pumpkin soup tasted a lot like those of other rest…
