Cantinetta, Burgos Circle

I've liked the Italian restaurant Cantinetta since I first tried it years ago. I remember that we featured it in our lifestyle show "F" as one of the year's best restaurants (I think that was in 2004). I'd only been to their branch in Rockwell, so I was glad that I would get to try their branch at The Fort, when some of my friends decided to meet up for dinner there.

Since I hadn't been to Cantinetta in a while, I decided to have my favorite dish there; the very simple but delicious pasta with olive oil, garlic, and chili. I like the size of the servings in Cantinetta. Not too small, but not obscenely big either. Just enough to fill you up. In fact, I had no more space for dessert after I finished the whole plate. Though maybe that was more because I also had a few slices of pizza from my friends' plates.

The dinner didn't last too long, because it was a weeknight and a few of my friends were tired, while some others had somewhere else to go. Next time I go to Cantinetta, I'll make sure I'll have enough time to eat even more slowly, have a few more courses, sip some wine, and enjoy some dessert.

Lab-as Seafood Restaurant in Dumaguete

The first time I went to Dumaguete City was some six or seven years ago. I went there to go scuba diving in Apo Island, one of the Philippines' best-protected marine sanctuaries. Apo Island is a 30-minute boat ride away from the city. There are two things I remember from that trip. One, diving Apo Island was great, and two, the food in Dumaguete was cheap.

So when my best couple-friends Anjou and Anton invited me to go diving with them in Apo Island over the Holy Week, I didn't hesitate. They never make me feel like a third wheel, so I figured going on this trip would be fun, and not at all awkward. Diving + cheap food... what's not to like?

We stayed at Antulang Resort, which is more than an hour's drive away from Dumaguete (and the airport). We ate most of our meals in Antulang (that's a whole different story), so I didn't really get to eat in the city until it was my last day.

After a couple of days of fantastic dives and a day of just bumming around in the re…

Catching up with cousins at Italianni's

My cousin Bong is a human rights lawyer in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He was in town recently to visit family and friends, and more significantly, to promote his self-published book, "God Loves Bakla". It talks about his painful struggle to stay in the closet, and the liberation he felt when he finally found the strength and courage to step out of it. I'm very proud that he has come out (no pun intended) with this book. It's going to be a very controversial book for some, and a helpful one for many others. But... that's a whole different story.

Anyway, I was lucky that he had some time to have lunch with me during his brief holiday, and he decided that we should meet up in Italianni's, because he missed having the caesar's salad there. Along with our other cousin Treena, we discussed his book over pizza and pasta. Luckily for me, they were agreeable to having pescetarian-friendly choices, so we ordered their Fettucine Alfredo with Shrimp, some Pizza Margherita,…

A new find: Relish, Hello Happiness! Restaurant

I'd seen the construction of this new restaurant "Relish" going on, because it's right beside Cerchio, where Chi and I so often have lunch. This week, we decided to finally try this new place. The facade amuses me, because it's so positive about how your experience will go. In fact, the complete name of the restaurant appears to be "Relish, Hello Happiness!" (Yes, it comes complete with exclamation point.)

When Chi and I entered, our first impression of the place was that it was a restaurant for "ladies who lunch", probably because a lot of the clientele at that time were, well, ladies. It was perfect for our purposes, as we wanted a place to chat and catch up on gossip since we hadn't seen each other for a few weeks.

I ordered the pumpkin soup to start, since I am still in search of the best pumpkin soup in the city, and Chi and I both ordered the Cream Dory with Lemon Pepper Sauce.

The pumpkin soup tasted a lot like those of other rest…
